CHIA Vic has welcomed the Victorian Government’s new affordable housing program announced today, saying management by the community housing sector could drive even bigger community benefits.

“This scheme creates a more affordable housing options for Victorians looking for stability in the private rental market” said CHIA Vic CEO Sarah Toohey.

“The Community Housing sector could boost the benefit of this scheme by delivering any profit back into other social and affordable housing programs”.

“Unlike private real estate agents, Community Housing organisations exist to benefit tenants. There’s no better way to change the face of renting, than by boosting the role of not-for-profit providers”

“There’s a huge gap in the housing market for people on moderate incomes who are looking for medium term rental, with a stable price. We’ve already seen prices jump as the economy recovers from lockdowns and the covid pandemic. This program will give stable rent and longer-term leases so that they can make their rental their home.”

The Victorian Government Scheme will deliver 2400 affordable rental properties across the state.
