Aman Thiep spoke only Dinka and Arabic when she arrived in Australia from Africa.
Now, the bright 19-year-old is studying bio-medical science at Deakin University, and hopes that one day she will be able to use her skills to help people in her home country of Sudan.
Aman has been a member of the Northern Geelong Rental Housing Co-operative for three years. She lives with her mother Leuza Malong, two of her four brothers, along with a niece and nephew. Her sister Dena and her family are also co-op members.
When Aman is not helping at a co-op event or attending a Social Planning Group meeting, she visits her grandmother in North Geelong, who teaches her and her siblings traditional stories from Sudan so that ‘we know who we are’.
‘Australia is open to different cultures and different backgrounds—and that’s cool!’.
