Mental Health First Aid is the help provided to a person who is developing a mental health problem, or who is in a mental health crisis. Like physical first aid, mental health first aid is given until the person receives professional help or until the crisis resolves.

In this two day course you will learn the skills to recognise and respond to someone experiencing a mental health problem or mental health crisis within the scope of a Mental Health First Aider

Learning outcomes

• Recognise the signs and symptoms of mental illnesses and crises
• Know how to assist and support someone experiencing mental health problems
• Deploy strategies for assisting in a mental health crisis
• Determine how to refer and provide information on professional support

Course topics

• Mental Health First Aid training and its background
• Recognising mental health problems:
• depression
• anxiety
• psychosis
• substance misuse
• Recognising mental health crises:
• suicidal thoughts and behaviours
• non-suicidal self-injury
• panic attacks
• traumatic events
• severe psychotic states
• acute effects from alcohol or other drug misuse
• aggressive behaviours

• Frontline community housing staff and team leaders
• Case managers
• Community development workers and tenant (resident) leaders
• Managers and supervisors

• Live training via the Zoom platform. The course runs for 12 hours over two consecutive days

Ian Goodhardt Ian Goodhardt
Ian is a psychologist and runs Goodhardt Consulting, offering counselling and conflict resolution services and training in mental health, conflict resolution skills, hoarding & squalor and trauma informed practice. He has delivered extensive training to the social housing sector. Ian holds Masters degrees in Counselling and Conflict resolution and is an accredited Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) instructor.
