2024 Community Housing Workforce Survey
The Victorian Community Housing Workforce Strategy highlights the need for improved data about the community housing workforce. In late 2022 a community housing workforce survey gathered data which informed the development of the Workforce Strategy.
CHIA Vic is committed to an ongoing process of workforce data collection as our sector grows and evolves. Workforce insights will help CHIA Vic members plan for recruitment and workforce development.
A new survey was conducted in June 2024 and CHIA Vic plans to continue annual workforce surveys.
2024 Workforce Survey results
In June 2024 CHIA conducted a Community Housing Workforce survey, involving questionnaires for individual workforce members and community housing organisations. Questions collected data about workforce profile, attitudes to working in community housing and experience of CHIA Vic training.
The data collected provide fresh insights into profile and attitudes in the workforce.
Key insights about sector employees (who responded to the survey):
- 49% are tertiary educated
- 55% are aged between 36 and 55 years
- 26% have lived experience of housing insecurity
- 41% have worked in the sector for five or more years
- 75% said socially impactful work is their primary reason for working in community housing
- 64% see a career path for themselves in community housing
- 41% expect to stay working in the sector for five or more years
- 70% are satisfied with their current role
Organisations who participated in the survey reported the following:
- Nearly all responded that socially impactful work is the main factor attracting staff to jobs in the sector
- Most indicated that the private real estate sector is a significant source for recruitment
- Half reported that training and professional development is the top workforce challenge followed by recruitment
- 79% of organisations and 76% of individuals were very satisfied or satisfied with CHIA Vic training
