Common Equity Housing Ltd (CEHL) completed an innovative mixed social and private housing development in Gipps Street, Abbotsford in 2013. Constructed on the site of an existing boot factory, the development retained the heritage façade of the factory building, while providing a modern residences.

The development comprises 59 units; 25 were retained by Common Equity Housing Ltd, 28 were sold to the private market, and six apartments were purchased by disability housing providers, the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) and Summer Foundation. They now provide appropriate, high-quality housing for people with disabilities, while at the same time integrating seamlessly into an otherwise conventional apartment complex.

By nestling the six disability units amongst 59 in total, the project eliminated any sense of an institutional model yet offered effective economies of scale that enabled a worker to be located on-site 24/7 to provide support.
