Today CHIA Vic is launching our State Election Platform, calling on all parties to commit to investing in social housing Beyond the Big Housing Build ahead of the Victorian state election in November.

The platform includes a plan to deliver 20,000 new social homes over the next ten years. Our $6 billion Social Housing Investment Fund would secure a pipeline of between 1,500 and 2,500 new properties a year, every year for the next ten years.

This fund would deliver a third of the homes we need to bring Victoria up to the national average proportion of social housing of 4.2 per cent of all housing stock.

We’re also calling for other initiatives that, combined with the Fund and Commonwealth Government investment, will help bridge the supply gap including:

  • Planning for Inclusive Communities – amend the Planning and Environment Act to allow councils to require social and affordable housing commitments in planning permits.
  • Support to Keep a Home – help prevent and end chronic homelessness through Housing First programs, Tenancy support and ongoing funding for Aboriginal housing tenancy supports.
  • Easing Regional Housing Pressure and Leaving a Commonwealth Games Legacy – use the new housing needed for the 2026 Commonwealth Games to trial a diverse housing model, and conduct an audit of under-utilised government-owned, both in regional Victoria.

You can read the full platform here.

And our media release here.

Help spread the word by sharing the platform on social media and calling on all parties to invest #beyondthebighousingbuild
