Rent setting in community housing can be complicated due the need for rents to meet government and regulatory requirements and the variety of programs and funding sources under which community housing operates.

This course will assist participants to understand rent setting across various housing programs and for different cohorts in Victoria, and provide an understanding of the various methodologies, contractual, legal, and regulatory requirements when setting rent.

 

Learning outcomes

  • Understand key principles of rent setting and use various rent setting models applicable to Victoria’s Social Housing system
  • Assess different forms of renter incomes and allowances for rent setting in social and affordable housing
  • Manage rent-related complaints and appeals
  • Explain social and affordable housing rent setting models to renters

 

Course topics include:

  • Housing programs and compliance requirements
  • Income and market-based rent setting
  • Income assessment, including the treatment of Commonwealth Rent Assistance
  • Property costs and service charges
  • Rent calculation and rent reviews
  • Recognising renter rights and dealing with complaints about rent
  • Explaining rent setting to renters

He is a past CEO of the Community Housing Federation of Victoria and founding board member of CHIA (Vic). Brett was an executive manager with Community Housing Limited and more recently worked with Homes Victoria as Director Community Housing.
