Please note that this training is only open to staff from CHIA Vic full member organisations.

This training course focuses on community engagement within the context of new social housing construction projects.

Over several sessions it will help participants understand what best practice community engagement looks like, and provide participants with practical tools and insights to help them plan and implement community engagement for their projects.

This training is comprised of three sessions. It has been designed as a complete program, so it is recommended that if possible, participants attends all sessions. However, if you are unable to attend the full program you are able to register for the individual session/s most relevant for you.

These training sessions will be facilitated by Village Well, and cover useful tools and tips for how to use the best practice community engagement framework being developed by Village Well for CHIA Vic.

Session 1 – Engagement principles

When: Tuesday 5 March 2024, 9:00 am – 12:30 pm

Where: Queen Victoria Women’s Centre, 210 Lonsdale Street, Melbourne 3000

Facilitators: 

  • Gilbert Rochecouste – Director, Village Well
  • Emma Hall – Senior Placemaker and Health and Wellbeing lead, Village Well
  • Emanuela Girotto – Trauma-Informed Therapist, Melbourne Transpersonal Counselling
  • Steve Ray – Senior Associate, Groupwork Centre

The session will introduce the community engagement framework developed by Village Well for CHIA Vic, and the framework’s principles; and explore the benefits and importance of good community engagement. Through the lens of the framework’s  engagement principles, the session will then start to explore some of the skills and knowledge that can improve community engagement:

  • Help participants start to understand the human condition through a trauma-informed and nervous system lens.
  • Help participants build self-awareness which supports the capacity to manage self and to relate effectively with others.
  • Explore the role of being a facilitator.
  • Share some key tools and insights to help strengthen their facilitation skills.

 

Session 2 – Engagement framework application

When: Tuesday 5 March 2024, 1:30 pm – 5:00 pm

Where: Queen Victoria Women’s Centre, 210 Lonsdale Street, Melbourne 3000

Facilitators: 

  • Gilbert Rochecouste – Director, Village Well
  • Emma Hall – Senior Placemaker and Health and Wellbeing lead, Village Well

This session will:

  • Explore the framework content in more detail.
  • Guide participants on how to apply the framework practically.
  • Provide opportunity to practically apply the framework tools through example exercises.

Session 3 – engagement fundamentals for project success

When: Tuesday 19 Mach 2024, 10:00 am – 12:00 pm

Where: Online (zoom)

Facilitator: Jack Panton – Director at Affordable Housing Solutions

Drawing on real-life projects examples, this session will explore how to successfully engage and manage the political landscape, and position and market your new social housing project.

If you are attending the full day in-person sessions on Tuesday March 5th (or would like to join us for lunch before/after the half day sessions) please select a lunch ticket and provide any dietary requirements.

The Village Well team have extensive experience in community engagement, as well as urban planning, place visioning, design development, retail precinct curation and management for property, educational institutions and government.

Village Well have worked with the community housing sector in Victoria, including developing a placemaking activation framework for Haven Home Safe’s New Epping project, and a community activity plan for Launch Housing Viv’s Place project in Dandenong.
