This half-day course provides an overview for new workers on everyday dealing with people who are tenants in the community housing sector.

It is aimed at ALL new workers in the sector. It looks at:

  • Responsibilities to tenants/ customers
  • Listening and communication practices
  • Problem-solving methods
  • Managing conflicts
  • Working with advocates
  • Setting expectations
  • Complaints
  • Cultural awareness
  • Use of interpreters
  • Arrears Management and why arrears happen

Mark Smoljo has worked in the community sector for 33 years, the last 29 years in community housing.  Following 4 years of generalist community development work, he worked as housing manager in various community housing organisations and local government for 18 years. Since 2010 he has been a project officer and tenancy/property expert for the Community Housing Industry Association Victoria (CHIA Vic) – the peak body representing community housing organisations in Victoria. He also conducts training and consultancy work for CHIA Vic and community housing organisations.
